Bolonia is quite a popular destination in Cadiz during the summer months, not to be confused with Bolonia, the city in Italy. Many of our clients decide to spend at least a few days on the beautiful beaches of this charming place on the Andalusian coast. The good thing about Bolonia is that you don’t need to be in summer to enjoy it, as it offers many things to do and places to visit; if you go in summer you can also add the high quality of its beaches and sand.
Baelo Claudia archaeological site in Bolonia
In Bolonia we find the ancient Roman city of Baelo Claudia dating back to the end of the 2nd century BC. It was a city dedicated almost exclusively to fishing and based its economy on the production of salted fish and the garum sauce that was so popular in Rome.
With the period of decline of the Roman Empire and the constant assaults, the city declined, although it survived until the 5th or 6th century. The onset of the great tsunami that devastated the Mediterranean coast ruined many of the buildings that still supported the city, which was already known as Belona, and the process of abandonment became more and more intense.
It was discovered in 1917 and is one of the most interesting Roman archaeological sites in the south of the peninsula. You can see almost everything that an average Roman city contained at that time, from housing and factories to the Roman roads, the sewers, the aqueduct, shops, taverns and even the forum and courts among many other places of interest.

Salted Fish Factory
Two millennia old, this salting factory once brought great wealth to a fortunate owner. At that time the salting of fish and garum sauce was very popular, and this factory has everything that was necessary for this process.
Facing the sea, it is in a privileged location. It shows us the symbiosis that existed between the ancient people of Cádiz and the coast, something that extended over the centuries and continues to this day.

Bolonia beach
Undoubtedly one of the biggest attractions in the area is the beach of Bolonia. It is very wide and begins at the foot of the dunes of the same name, its westernmost part is next to the archaeological remains of a Roman city. A natural and privileged environment offers us its transparent waters for bathing or for a pleasant stroll.
With fine white sand, it invites us to take off our shoes and feel it under our feet. It is undoubtedly a highly recommended place to visit, especially if you are looking for a swim and enjoy the surroundings.

Natural pools
In the easternmost part we find some fantastic natural pools formed with sea water. The rocks that surround them cause the formation of these pools, which are ideal during the summer. They are very close to a pleasant hiking route that starts in the Pinar del Chaparral pine grove and leads to different destinations, along which you can also see some Roman remains.
